Collective monograph “People and Power: Occupants, Collaborationists and Partisans on the Border Territory of Belarus and North-West Russia in 1941-1944”

As part of a joint Russian-Belarusian scientific project, a collective monograph “People and Power: Occupants, Collaborationists and Partisans on the Border Territory of Belarus and North-West Russia in 1941-1944” was published.

It examines the issue of the relationship of the civilian population with members of the resistance movement, representatives of the German occupation and local auxiliary administration and fighters of the armed forces of collaborators on the border territory of Belarus and North-West Russia in 1941-1944.

The main forms and methods of countering the resistance movement by the occupying authorities are shown, the losses among the civilian population and partisans are studied, the problem of preserving the memory of the victims of Nazism is raised on the example of Belarus and North-West Russia.

One of the authors of this publication is the leading researcher of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of History Boris Nikolaevich Kovalev.

The 2nd Likhachev Readings and N.P. Likhachev Academic Award

The Second Readings in memory of Academician N.P. Likhachev will be held on April 14, 2022 at St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Historians, philologists, orientalists, archaeologists, art historians, as well as relatives of the scientist will gather in Likhachev’s house to honor his memory. For the first time, N.P. Likhachev Academic Award will be granted for outstanding works on source studies and auxiliary historical disciplines.

Online discussion of the monograph “Suffering and survival during the war: the life of people in the conditions of the blockade of Leningrad, 1941-1944” (published by the University of Oxford, 2021) by a well-known sociologist, professor at the University of Richmond and St. Petersburg State University Jeffrey Hass took place on April 11, 2022 within joint seminar of the laboratory “History of the Siege of Leningrad” of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Department of the State Memorial Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad – Institute of the History of Defense and Siege of Leningrad.

780 years ago the Battle on the Ice happened

780 лет назад произошло Ледовое побоище

780 years ago, on April 5 (12), 1242, the Battle of the Ice took place on Lake Peipus. This battle is most vividly represented in the Novgorod annals. The virtual exhibition of one document displays pages describing the battle from the Commission copy of the Novgorod First Letopis, which is stored in the Scientific and Historical Archive of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the RAS.

For the first time, ordinary citizens will be able to get acquainted with one of the oldest documents live at the exhibition “The Novgorod the First Letopis – a unique monument of Russian literature” in the Novgorod Museum. The Archaeograpic commission’s copy of the Novgorod the First Letopis from the collection of the Archive of SPbIH of the RAS has never left its place of storage before. The exhibition became possible thanks to the project “The History of European Civilization Writing” and the cooperation of Novgorod State Joint Museum Reserve and SPbIH of the RAS.

Late 19th – early 20th century called the “Golden Age of the Postcard”, when philocartist organizations appeared throughout Europe, magazines and catalogs were printed, international exhibitions were held, as well as congresses of collectors and publishers. The virtual exhibition presents images of postcards from the Minin collection of the Russian Section of the Archives of St. Petersburg Institute of Science and Technology, Russian Academy of Sciences.
